Iraqi Prime Minister Muhammad Shiaa Al-Sudani stressed “the necessity of ensuring that Iraq’s airspace, lands and waters are not used to attack neighboring countries.”
Al-Sudani stressed, in a call with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio at dawn today, “the importance of ensuring that Iraqi airspace, lands and waters are not used in any military action targeting neighboring countries or the region,” stressing “Iraq’s principled position not to engage in military actions, just as it refuses to be involved in ongoing conflicts, and refuses to violate its airspace from any party.”
He also stressed “Iraq’s commitment to protecting the missions, embassies and consulates represented on its territory.”
For his part, US Secretary of State spokesman Tommy Pigot said in a statement, “Rubio strongly condemned the terrorist attacks launched by Iran and the armed groups loyal to it in Iraq, including the Iraqi Kurdistan region.”
He pointed out that “the Iraqi and American officials stressed the importance of the Iraqi government taking all possible measures to protect American diplomats and facilities.”
The Foreign Ministry condemns the targeting of diplomatic and consular missions
In turn, the Iraqi Ministry of Foreign Affairs today condemned what it described as “attacks” that targeted diplomatic and consular missions in Baghdad and the Kurdistan region of Iraq, stressing Iraq’s rejection of any attack targeting diplomatic headquarters.
The Ministry said, in a statement, that it expresses its “strong condemnation and denunciation” of these attacks, considering them “condemnable acts” that contradict international obligations related to the protection of diplomatic missions.
The Foreign Ministry reaffirmed Iraq’s firm position rejecting any attack on diplomatic and consular missions, stressing its keenness to provide them with full protection to ensure the continuation of their work and the performance of their duties in a safe environment.
The statement confirmed that the competent Iraqi authorities are following up on any incidents affecting these missions, and will take the necessary legal measures against those involved, to ensure the protection of diplomatic headquarters, maintain their security, and prevent the recurrence of such attacks, and to preserve Iraq’s relations with brotherly and friendly countries.
Yesterday, Al-Sudani reiterated his “rejection of war and aggression, as well as attempts to involve Iraq in the conflict,” calling for the establishment of a diplomatic alliance that includes the countries of the region and the European Union to stop the war in the region.
The Islamic Resistance in Iraq has been launching offensive operations against American bases in Erbil since the expansion of the American-Israeli war on Iran.
