Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez described the ongoing war in the Middle East as “absurd, brutal and illegal,” stressing that it entailed a scenario that was “much worse” than the invasion of Iraq in 2003.
Sanchez said before Parliament today: “This is not the same scenario that we witnessed in the illegal war in Iraq. We are facing something much worse, whose impact could be much broader and deeper.”
He pointed out that this war is hindering his country from achieving its economic, social and environmental goals, warning that attacks on Iran may have a similar economic impact on millions of people.
He pointed out that the American invasion of Iraq in 2003 failed to achieve its goals, but rather increased the suffering of citizens, when it led to a sharp rise in fuel and food prices, caused a migration crisis, and exposed Europe to attacks carried out by Islamic extremists.
The Spanish Prime Minister had rejected Washington’s request to use Spanish military bases to attack Iran, despite US President Donald Trump’s threat to cut trade relations with Spain.
