President Nabih Berri followed developments in the situation and political and field developments during his meeting with Prime Minister Nawaf Salam and MP Ihab Matar.
Representative Ihab Matar: We hope that the title of the negotiations will first be stopping the Israeli aggression, Israel’s withdrawal from Lebanese territory, the return of the prisoners, and stopping the infringement of Lebanese sovereignty.
Representative Matar: We emphasized the necessity of adhering to the Taif Agreement and the necessity of implementing all its provisions, which is a guarantee of civil peace.
His Excellency the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr. Nabih Berri, received at the headquarters of the Second Presidency in Ain al-Tineh Prime Minister Nawaf Salam. The discussion covered developments in the situation and the latest political developments on the ground in light of Israel’s continued violation of the ceasefire in the south, in addition to the file of the displaced.
President Salam briefed the Speaker of Parliament on the atmosphere and results of his visit to France and Luxembourg.
Speaker Berri also followed up on the political developments and developments in the general situation and legislative affairs during his meeting with MP Ihab Matar, who said after the meeting: We hope that the title of these negotiations will first be stopping the Israeli aggression and, of course, Israel’s withdrawal from Lebanese territory, the return of the prisoners, and stopping the infringement of Lebanese sovereignty. We hope that there will be work on demarcating the borders in order to secure at least a hundred-year truce.
He added: We also touched on the issue of the joint committee session yesterday, and of course we know President Berri’s keenness on legislation, and we spoke about the issue of general amnesty. We hope that this framework will be expedited and that it will be approved, as it is in the interest of the Lebanese people and a national interest, and it is an end to the injustice to which a number of our Lebanese youth are exposed, especially the Islamist positions.
Matar continued: We emphasized the necessity of adhering to the Taif Agreement and the necessity of implementing all its provisions because it is an agreement that guarantees civil peace.
We share our thanks to the sisterly Arab countries, especially the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, for the role it is playing, especially the issue of caring for Lebanon and not abandoning Lebanon is a strength card in the hands of the Lebanese party in the negotiations. Of course, today the issue of peace is that we are all behind the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, and we all know that the Arab initiative set a basic condition, which is the two-state solution, which means recognition of the State of Palestine, and last year the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia was able to extract recognition of the State of Palestine from a large number of foreign countries.
He concluded: Finally, we talked about the issue of the government, its support, and maintaining civil peace, and we hope that we, as Lebanese, are going to better days. Prime Minister Berri expressed optimism about the next stage.
