Today, Saturday, Pope Leo XIV thanked Spain for its support for international law, multilateralism, and its commitment to achieving peace.
The Pope delivered a speech at the Royal Palace in the Spanish capital, Madrid, the first stop of his visit, in the presence of King Felipe VI and members of his family, Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, and members of the government, in addition to high-level figures from the political, diplomatic and religious circles.
During his speech at the Royal Palace in the Spanish capital, Madrid, the Pope referred to “the policy of the Spanish government, expressing his thanks to it for its “support for international law, multilateralism, and its commitment to peace.”
It is noteworthy that Madrid opposes the American-Israeli aggression against Iran, describes the Israeli aggression against Gaza as genocide, and officially recognizes the State of Palestine.
The Pope called on Spanish politicians and those responsible for institutions to “increase investments allocated to schools, universities, scientific research and civil society.”
He said: “Instead of relying on weapons and walls to achieve security, we must move towards advancing together, shoulder to shoulder.”
The Pope referred to the period of Islamic rule in Andalusia, pointing out that the Islamic presence in Spain during that era was not just a stage of conflict, but also created a space for coexistence and dialogue between Christians, Muslims and Jews about the meaning of truth.
