A strong earthquake shakes Venezuela and Colombia and tsunami warnings


A strong earthquake shook north-central Venezuela on Wednesday, near the capital, Caracas, and residents in neighboring Colombia reported that they also felt the tremors.

The US Geological Survey said that a 7.1-magnitude earthquake struck the Montalban region of Venezuela, at a depth of 13 kilometers.

Residents of Caracas rushed to evacuate buildings as they shook due to the earthquake, and one witness said that cracks appeared on one side of his apartment, and the entrance glass was shattered.

The US Tsunami Warning System issued a warning of the possibility of tsunami waves in Puerto Rico and the US and British Virgin Islands following the earthquake.

He said that the islands off the coast of Venezuela may be exposed to dangerous waves.
