The head of the Labor Union calls for an emergency meeting and threatens escalation!

In a statement, the President of the General Labor Union in Lebanon, Bechara Al-Asmar, called for an emergency session of the Union’s Executive Council to be held next Thursday, July 2, at ten in the morning in the General Labor Union building – River Corniche, to take the necessary steps to escalate through sit-ins and strikes, in protest against the decree that greatly harms workers, employees, and all categories of the Lebanese people in various sectors, in light of the current security conditions, recession, and slowdown in economic activity.

He said: “Law 38/2026 issued by the House of Representatives, which imposed fees on some products according to the quantity or quality of waste resulting from their manufacture or use in application of the principle of producer responsibility, had specified percentages in Table No. 1 attached to it between 0.1% and 0.3%.”

He added: “However, the Council of Ministers multiplied these percentages ten times, and amended some of their provisions pursuant to Decree No. 3214, which was published in the Official Gazette in Issue No. 26 dated 6/18/2026, which constitutes a huge burden on citizens, especially since the table includes fuel and foodstuffs. The Council also did not take into account the consequences resulting from these fees on consumption, in light of the continuing security deterioration, attacks, displacement, and the worsening economic and social conditions in various regions.” Lebanese.
