Beirut’s beloved Mafia Bakery has now moved to a new location in Gemmayze! If you’re a regular or you’ve been planning to pay them a visit, here’s everything you need to know.
Once located in Gemmayze’s The Alleyway next to Aaliya’s Books (now STIR Social House), the bakery moved to the main street, right across from GOU.
You’ll be able to smell their fresh bakes as you stroll through the streets, and you won’t be able to resist stopping by.
The move also gives it a larger, more visible home on Gemmayze’s main street, making one of Beirut’s favorite bakeries even easier to stumble upon.
About this local bakery
“Pronounced”Mawiya“Mavia Bakery is a women-led sourdough bakery and social enterprise. It’s mostly known for its naturally fermented breads, pastries, and seasonal brunches made with locally grown heirloom wheat.
The bakery works directly with farmers in the Bekaa to grow pesticide-free heirloom wheat varieties that have largely disappeared from mainstream use. The grain is then stone-milled in Zahle, helping preserve its nutritional value while supporting local agriculture.
Named after the 4th-century warrior queen Mafia, the bakery operates from a cooperative kitchen. It was founded to create employment opportunities for women in professional kitchens while promoting local, sustainable food systems.
They’re known for their freshly baked sourdough loaves, pastries, and homemade desserts. Their Friday-night wood-fired pizzas are a local favorite, so if you’re planning a visit, make sure it’s on a Friday!
Have you ever tried Mafia Bakery? If not, make sure to stop by their new space in Gemmayze once it’s ready!
