Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi confirmed on Friday that the issuance of any Security Council resolution regarding the Strait of Hormuz “will itself become part of the problem.”

Araqchi condemned the American moves, along with some countries in the Security Council, to put pressure on Iran, noting that “any provocative action by the aggressors and their protectors, including what is happening in the UN Security Council regarding the status of the Strait of Hormuz, will only complicate the situation further.”

The UN Security Council postponed the vote, which was scheduled for today, Friday, on a draft resolution submitted by Bahrain authorizing the use of “defensive force” to protect navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, amid declared opposition from China, which has veto power.

Regarding the reason for the postponement, diplomatic sources reported that the United Nations considers “Good Friday” an official holiday, even though this occasion was known when the voting date was announced.

Meanwhile, Reuters quoted two diplomats that the vote of the Security Council, which includes 15 members, will take place tomorrow morning, Saturday, and not Friday, as was previously planned.

The closure of the Strait of Hormuz – through which about 20% of the world’s oil and liquefied gas supplies passes – led to a sharp rise in energy prices and disruption of supply chains.

The Permanent Representative of the Kingdom of Bahrain to the United Nations, Jamal Al-Ruwaie, warned this week against “the continuation of this situation, and that there will be economic strangulation and terrorism on our countries, and also on the world,” noting that the text, which has undergone several amendments and is supported by the United States, “comes at a sensitive and important time.”

US President Donald Trump had called on countries that depend on oil to resort to one of two options: either buy it from the United States, or arm themselves with “courage” to take control of the strait.
