“An-Nahar” newspaper asked Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri about his prediction a month after the Israeli aggression against Lebanon. He said: “The answer is a question, rather questions that present themselves, after the Israeli military levels announced their intentions to target ambulances and hospitals and expand what they called the buffer zone in the south of the Litani, displacing a third of Lebanon’s population, targeting the Lebanese army and UNIFIL forces, and the total destruction of more than 30 border villages completely. Can anyone predict or expect what? What is on the mind of the Israeli government and its war council? What is more than more killing and destruction, contrary to all the rules of international humanitarian law, in an attempt to break the will of the Lebanese and discourage them from clinging to their land and preventing its occupation?
Berri added, “What is required from Lebanon?”
Firstly, secondly, and until one stops breathing, work to fortify civil peace and national unity, yes, national unity, and purify the political and religious discourse of everything that would open the doors to internal strife that only the Israeli enemy can benefit from, and realize that what is targeting Lebanon as a result of the Israeli aggression is not targeting a specific sect, but rather targeting Lebanon in its position and role. Unity is an essential factor for shortening the duration of the aggression and preventing the occupation. An exceptional diplomatic effort is also required towards the international community in order to restore the flow of life and work. And adherence to the Mechanism Committee as a framework and mechanism to stop the war and implement the November 2024 agreement in full and point in line.”
