President Berri reiterated before Guterres the emphasis on Lebanon’s adherence to UN Resolution 1701, which there is no alternative to UNIFIL forces implementing it with the support of the Lebanese army, calling for the necessity of obliging Israel to stop its aggression and implement the November 2024 agreement. In turn, the Secretary-General of the United Nations, António Guterres, spoke after the meeting, saying: I regret to see this terrible suffering that the hospitable Lebanese people are going through, which has always hosted displaced Palestinians and Syrians, and today my heart is sad to see this large number of displaced Lebanese inside Lebanon with a large number of deaths, it is a very tragic situation. Guterres added: My message is very clear, we must put an end to this war, and there must be an immediate ceasefire. And my call and appeal to both parties is: Let us implement an immediate ceasefire and stop this great suffering of the Lebanese people, and let us all be sure that within the ceasefire there will be negotiations to ensure that Lebanon will regain sovereignty over its lands and that its sovereignty will be respected, and at the same time that the Lebanese state with all its components will be able to be a strong state and be able to exercise control over the entire country.
