In the middle of it all, here’s a heartwarming story from the south. Hussein Mezayyel, a Lebanese man in the southern city of Tire, has chosen to stay despite evacuation orders. He says he won’t leave without his adorable pet monkey, Sandra.

“She’s not just an animal to me, it’s like I have a child,” he admits in a video. He has been sleeping in his car, moving between areas when needed, trying to keep both himself and Sandra safe. Their home was located in an area marked for evacuation, forcing them to leave it behind.

“Wherever I go, Sandra goes with me. I wouldn’t put her in danger,” he continues. Sandra is the main reason he refuses to leave, even as others continue to evacuate the area. Daily life has become more difficult, and even basic tasks require extra effort.

When he steps out for essentials, he has to make sure she’s safe. His routine now revolves around her care, from feeding and bathing her to make sure she stays calm in unfamiliar environments.

Despite the circumstances, Sandra brings small moments of normalcy to his day. Whether it’s sitting beside him in the car or reacting to the world around her, she adds a sense of routine to an otherwise uncertain situation. At the same time, his decision reflects a broader reality for many people. Some residents remain in place because they cannot leave everything behind. Others stay to protect what is left of their homes and lives.
