The British newspaper “The Telegraph” reported that the administration of US President Donald Trump is encouraging the UAE to engage more directly in the war against Iran, while some officials have suggested that Abu Dhabi take control of the Iranian island of Lavan.
The newspaper quoted a former senior US national security official as saying that the use of Emirati forces would spare the United States from exposing its soldiers to direct danger.
The official said: “Go and control them!” “There will be Emirati forces on the ground instead of American forces.”
This trend comes in light of reports of the UAE’s growing involvement in the conflict with Iran, in addition to strengthening its relations with Israel.
The newspaper also pointed out the expansion of cooperation between the UAE and Israel during the war.
Earlier this month, the US Ambassador to Israel, Mike Huckabee, confirmed during a conference at Tel Aviv University that Israel had sent Iron Dome batteries to the UAE for use in confronting Iranian attacks.
Reports also revealed that Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu visited the UAE last March at the beginning of Operation “Lion’s Roar,” and that the visit resulted in an “important breakthrough,” despite Abu Dhabi’s denial of its occurrence.
The newspaper quoted Burgu Ozcelik, a researcher at the Royal United Services Institute, as saying that the war “accelerated the formation of an American-Israeli-Emirati axis.”
However, at the same time, it warned that deepening military cooperation with Israel might push other Arab countries to consider the UAE a partner in the Israeli aggression against Gaza.
