US Vice President J.D. Vance said that the Iranians want to reach an agreement, noting in an interview with reporters that “it is still too early to know when, or if, an agreement will be reached.”
Vance explained that the United States and Iran are exchanging notes on a number of points related to drafting the text, including the issue of enrichment, pointing out that Washington believes that the Iranians are negotiating in good faith.
He added: “We are in a position to bring about a sustainable decline in their nuclear program,” he said.
Earlier, a member of the media team close to the Iranian negotiating delegation, Saeed Ajerloo, stressed that Iran did not make any commitment regarding the nuclear issue in the negotiations with the United States.
In response to a question about the latest developments in the negotiations, and the date of US President Donald Trump signing the memorandum of understanding, Vance said that it is difficult to determine an exact date for that, or whether Trump will sign it at all, explaining that work is still underway on details related to the text.
Vance indicated that great progress has been made on this path, considering that it has become clear, in his estimation, that the Iranians want to conclude an agreement, and they also want to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. He added that Washington, in turn, wants Tehran to open the Strait.
The US Vice President pointed out that some issues are still pending in the nuclear aspect, specifically what is related to the stockpile of highly enriched uranium, and the issue of enrichment itself, stressing the continued exchange of views and discussions with the Iranian side.
Vance said: “We see that they are negotiating, at least until this moment, in good faith, and that we are making some progress,” expressing his hope that this progress will continue, putting the US President in a position to ratify the agreement, while stressing that the matter is still subject to the final details.
In this context, Vance considered that the ceasefire with Iran is “largely established and stable,” noting that there are certain details that must be settled, and it may take some time to resolve them.
He added that part of what Washington seeks is to pave the way for successful negotiations, reaching a stage that allows sitting at the negotiating table and resolving the outstanding issues.
For about a month and a half, the American-Iranian parties have been negotiating, with Pakistani mediation and Qatari assistance, in order to reach an end to the war, and Tehran insists on the necessity of stopping the war first, including in Lebanon, before discussing any matter related to its nuclear program.
