Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said that, today, Wednesday, he discussed with US President Donald Trump joint cooperation in the defense sector, noting that this cooperation may include building ships, such as frigates, submarines, and small warships (corvettes).
In a speech at the conclusion of the NATO summit in Ankara, Erdogan also stated during a press conference that the United States had largely lifted the defense sanctions imposed on Türkiye.
Today, Wednesday, the countries of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), including the United States, affirmed their firm commitment to the mutual defense clause stipulated in Article Five of the NATO Treaty, according to the text of the Ankara Summit Declaration.
The declaration issued on the second and final day of the NATO summit stipulated that “an attack on any ally is an attack on all allies.” He also added: “Our unity, solidarity and collective strength remain the foundation on which peace, security and prosperity are based.”
For his part, Trump assured his European allies that the United States intends to remain within NATO, according to a source who participated in the NATO summit meeting.
The source, who requested to remain anonymous, also explained that the US President told the allies during the plenary session of the Ankara summit, “We want to stay with you.”
The text of the summit announcement came hours after Trump confirmed his dissatisfaction with the member states of the alliance against the backdrop of several issues, the most important of which is the American desire to seize the Greenland region, and not contributing to the American-Israeli war on Iran.
NATO activated Article 5, which is a fundamental pillar of the alliance established in 1949, only once, and that was in solidarity with the United States after the attacks of September 11, 2001.
