The Beirut Port Administration and Investment explained in a statement that “the smoke that was seen this morning resulted from a limited renewal of the ignition inside the insulated container that had been exposed to a fire yesterday, Monday,” stressing that the Beirut Port firefighting team intervened immediately, with the support of the Beirut Fire Brigade and the Civil Defense, and the container was re-cooled and the fire was extinguished.

In detail, a limited fire broke out yesterday, Monday, in one of the containers on board a ship at sea while it was heading towards the port of Beirut. Immediately after the incident occurred, the ship’s captain reported that the fire was under control.

Meanwhile, the port presidency and the Lebanese Navy were informed of the matter, and immediately moved towards the ship’s location at sea in coordination with the PSO and PFSO of Beirut Port. After verifying that the fire was extinguished and under complete control, the ship was allowed to enter and dock at Pier (16), amid strict security and safety measures, with the support and accompaniment of the Beirut Fire Brigade, the Port Fire Team, the Lebanese Army Rescue Center and the Container Terminal Management.

Immediately after the ship docked, the specialized teams began to remove the container from the ship, where it was dealt with in accordance with the requirements of the International Ship and Port Facility Security Code (ISPS Code), and with the highest public safety standards to ensure the safety of the ship’s crew, employees, the port campus, and the ship itself, without recording any injuries or additional damage.”
