A stately antique katazome fabric panel to make your artwork.
A stately antique katazome fabric panel to make your artwork or wardrobe better!! This one is a good length to make a scarf as is! Real hand woven, hand stenciled, hand dyed fabric. So much better than any modern fabrics you can get nowadays. Pine, bamboo and plum motif crests on karakusa base motif.
The fabric is over one hundred years old handwoven cotton. I love the smell and feel of old indigo cotton fabric. Such a dark indigo it almost looks black, in some light. The fabric is rather light weight, not so thick. It is also hand woven. The selvedges are uneven. Super uneven. Homespun. That gives it a warm, organic feel. It would be great for clothing, because it is soft and flexible, yet sturdy. Yet, it would breath quite a bit.
Katazome is a type of resist dyeing which was common amongst the mingei textiles. It involves first applying a rice paste called 'nori' to fabric using stencils, called katagami, and then, after that nori has dried, dyeing the fabric. The areas covered with dried nori remain undyed, and that is called 'resist dyeing', referring to the nori 'resisting' the dye and not allowing it to access the fabric. This fabric has been dyed with indigo, as are most Japanese katazome fabrics. Katazome is time consuming and not easy to master.
Some katazome fabrics were pasted on just one side before dyeing, and others were pasted on both sides. This was one which was pasted on both sides. You can see in the last photo some places on this panel where the pasting didn't perfectly correspond on both sides, leading to a doubled image when the fabric is viewed held up to the light. It must have been nearly impossible to actually line all the resist pasting up. I cannot even imagine trying to do that.

This fabric is in good condition. There are a couple very faint stains. There are also two holes. They are one each end, though. One is a larger hole, large enough to fit about two fingers, and you can see it well in the photos. The other hole, on the other end of the fabric, is tiny and could probably barely accommodate a pencil.
You could use this fabric in garments and other sewing projects. Collaging, scrapbooking, book binding, and on. Patchwork. Framing. Display!!! Display it just as it is in your space, living space OR work space, for a change in atmosphere, a calming and aesthetic effect. Across furniture or on a wall, in a bathroom or a stairwell. It would be cool anywhere!!
