Vintage black rinzu silk kimono jacket (haori) with a design discount of fans in urushi lacquer, Vintage black rinzu silk kimono jacket (haori) with a design of fans in urushi lacquer The base fabric.
Vintage black rinzu silk kimono jacket (haori) with a design of fans in urushi lacquer. The base fabric is a very soft smooth falling rinzu (patterned) silk with an all-over sayagata (maze-like) pattern. The haori features a design of sensu (Japanese folding fans) with tachibana, ume, and matsu (mandarin orange, plum, pine) in natural brown, green, and silver urushi lacquer. The jacket has a painted outlined gosankirimon (five-three paulownia crest) on the center back. The silk lining is a simple colorful square design.
The urushi lacquer is applied to paper or foil, and optionally gold or silver foil is "glued" onto the lacquer, after which the material is sliced into thin strips which are either used as-is and woven into the fabric or are twisted around a silk, cotton, or rayon core to create threads for weaving. Nowadays most natural materials are substituted with synthetic materials and chemical processes are used to create metallic threads.
Age: vintage
Condition: very good
A haori is a casual Japanese kimono jacket, that can be worn both inside and outside as an extra layer to stay warm, or to protect the kimono. Haori is loosely closed in front using short ties called himo in Japanese.
Haori can be worn in combination with western clothes, like a discount cardigan or light jacket. Depending on the design and combination you can create a unique, formal or casual, look.
