The Palau de la Música, along with La Pedrera, is considered one of the supreme examples of Catalan Modernisme for its brilliant, bold and sumptuously decorated architecture, and proudly boasts the title of UNESCO World Heritage Site. But it was not always so: the Palau de la Música was one of the last extravagances of Modernisme and, as early as the 1920s, it began to be questioned to the point that the neighbors called it "el palau de la quincalleria" (the palace of the quincalleria) and the architects of the time advocated its demolition. Fortunately, they never succeeded and the Palau has been preserved, becoming an emblematic institution intimately linked to the collective memory of the people of Barcelona.
